Glaucoma Eye Care in Houston

Houston Optometrist

Can you remember the last time you had a comprehensive eye exam? If not it is very important that you come in to see us for an eye exam as soon as possible. This is because many eye diseases and disorders do not show any symptoms in the early stages. In fact, many people are diagnosed with glaucoma when they least expect it. Glaucoma like many other eye diseases has no obvious symptoms in the early stages. For this reason people often feel there is no reason to come in for an eye exam. Unfortunately, glaucoma treatment is currently limited to stopping the disease’s advance; vision already lost to glaucoma cannot be restored. If you want to come in for a comprehensive eye exam that will screen you for glaucoma and many other eye diseases, make an appointment to see our expert Houston optometrist at West U Vision.

At our eye care practice we are very happy to have two expert therapeutic optometrists on staff. They are Dr. Christine Castillo and Dr. MH Rockoff. Our optometrist will be able to perform diagnostic tests to see if you do indeed have glaucoma. If you are diagnosed with this serious disease, and it is caught in the early stages, our optometrist will be able to offer you treatment options that will keep the disease from progressing. And, hopefully the disease will be caught early enough so that you will not suffer any vision loss at all. Our Houston optometrist will test your eye pressure to screen for glaucoma. If your eye pressure is high it does not immediately mean that you have glaucoma. Additional vision tests will need to be performed to make a definitive diagnosis.

Glaucoma is actually the name for a specific group of eye diseases. For most patients there are few or actually no symptoms that would point to glaucoma. When a symptom finally does occur, it is usually a loss of peripheral vision. Our Houston optometrist warns that even this symptom often goes unnoticed until the disease has had a chance to take hold in the eye. Sudden eye pain, severe headache, blurred vision, or the appearance of halos around lights may eventually develop. Other symptoms of glaucoma may include redness in the eyes, nausea, or narrowing vision. It is easy to take our good sight for granted until something happens. Don’t let your vision be stolen by glaucoma or any other eye disease; make an appointment with our Houston optometrist today for a comprehensive eye exam.

Conjunctivitis is a common eye infection that is highly contagious. If your child’s eyes become red and possibly crusty you will want to bring him or her in to see our optometrist for treatment. If you are due for a comprehensive eye exam, it is very important that you have this performed in order to make sure that your eyes do not have any eye diseases or disorders. Many eye diseases, such as glaucoma, do not show any symptoms in the early stages. However, this does not mean that glaucoma is not currently doing damage to your eyes; it can even be permanently damaging your eyes without your even knowing it. This is but one reason why it is very important to come to us for periodic Houston vision care in the form of comprehensive eye exams.

Our eye exams are very thorough. During the first part of our eye exam your eyes will be thoroughly checked for any kinds of refractive error is including nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism. If it is determined that you have a refractive vision problem our optometrist will be able to write a lens prescription for you which will have you seeing clearly once again. You will then receive medicated drops in your eyes which will cause your eyes to dilate so that the interior of your eye can be examined, including the retina, macula and blood vessels surrounding the retina. During our eye exam your eyes will be screened for a wide variety of vision problems including: glaucoma; cataracts; macular degeneration; diabetic retinopathy; retinal tears; and of the problems of the cornea, macula and retina. Whether you need an eye exam, a new pair of frames, to re-order your contact lenses, or because you are experiencing eye symptoms, we the professionals at West U Vision are here to help with friendly and knowledgeable service and compassionate eye care. Our eye doctor in Houston wants you to see your best and to maintain strong and healthy eyes for your entire lifetime. The cornerstone of that is our comprehensive eye exams, which are recommended for all of our patients once per year. Regardless of your age, your vision needs can change from year to year. So even if you didn’t need corrective lenses last year, you may need them now. Or if you already wear contact lenses or eyeglasses, it may be time to update your prescription. One that is inadequate to what your current needs are is not much better than having no prescription at all.

An eye exam is also essential so you can be screened for common eye diseases. Sure, you may feel perfectly fine, but were you aware that eye diseases typically have no symptoms when they form and even as the progress? It’s true. And by the time you do notice signs, it’s often an indication of damage to your eyes or vision loss that cannot be reversed. This is why it’s so vital to be examined every year. Among the eye diseases that you’ll be screened for by our eye doctor in Houston are glaucoma and cataracts, which can affect anyone at any age. Other diseases are applicable to specific age groups, such as macular degeneration, which occurs in people over age 60. And diabetic retinopathy, as the name indicates, is something that is checked for in patients with type one or type two diabetes.

And if you find you are experiencing any eye symptoms, you should call us right away and schedule an appointment with our eye doctor in Houston. Blurred vision, eye discharge, reddened eyes, eye pain, and any loss of vision are just some of the signs that may indicate a problem that should be addressed. A long term professional relationship will allow us to stay on top of your eye health and catch any potential issues early.

Glaucoma Testing in Houston

Glaucoma Testing in Houston

Glaucoma Testing in Houston

Glaucoma is one of the number one causes of blindness in the United States. Each year, more and more Americans over the age of 65 are diagnosed with glaucoma. At West U Vision, we offer glaucoma testing in Houston at our optometrist offices.

Most people develop glaucoma as they get older. It usually affects people over the age of 65, although it isn’t uncommon for people of any age with poor vision and eyesight to eventually develop it. Those who are pregnant and have medical conditions such as diabetes are also at risk for glaucoma. Glaucoma testing in Houston is simple and easy to do. We will first assess your eyes with a comprehensive eye exam. Then we will begin the glaucoma testing, which can happen with a number of different tests. The first is the tonometer test, which measures pressure in the eye. A numbing eye drop is placed in the eye while our eye doctor looks at a magnified portion of your eye. Another test is called the pachymeter test, in which the corneal thickness is measured. Both of these tests are simple, effective, and can predict whether or not glaucoma will develop in the eye.

Other exams used for glaucoma testing in Houston are visual field tests, opthalmoscopy tests and gonioscopy tests. Glaucoma is usually treated first with eye drops before anything. This works on most individuals. Eye drops are the least invasive and have the least side effects, so are preferred by most doctors. If eye drops are not sufficient to help combat the progression of glaucoma, then medication or surgery may be prescribed to fix the problem. Glaucoma cannot be reversed but it can be slowed down as it progresses before it becomes worse and causes vision loss. Treatment can be adjusted according to the side effects the individual experiences, the level of glaucoma progression, and age. At West U Vision our goal is to treat all of our patient’s eyes in the most convenient and comfortable space available, and we pride ourselves on going to great lengths to provide the best in customer service and care.
