Eye Exam in Houston TX

Difference between an eye exam and a vision screening in Houston TX

There are many eye diseases which show no symptoms in the early stages. This is just one reason why it is so important to have an eye exam each year. At West U Vision, patients can receive a comprehensive eye exam in Houston TX, and not just a vision screening.

When you come into our office to have a comprehensive eye exam or contact lens exam and fitting, you will be seen by one of our therapeutic optometrists, either Dr. Christine Castillo, or Dr. MH Rockoff. During a comprehensive eye exam in Houston TX, your eyes will be screened for many different eye diseases and disorders as well as for any refractive errors, such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism. When you leave our vision practice, you can rest assured that your eyes have been thoroughly examined and that they are healthy. You can also be sure that any new lens prescriptions will have you seeing as clearly as possible. If you are getting contact lenses, your eyes will be properly measured to make sure the new contact lenses fit your eyes perfectly. However, when a person simply has a vision screening, it usually means that their eyes have been checked to make sure that they can see clearly at a certain distance. For example, when you go to the Department of Motor Vehicles to get your new driver’s license, your eyes will probably be screened to make sure that you can see cars up to a certain distance, and can read street signs. At school, your child may have a vision screening to make sure he or she can see clearly see to the front of the room where the teacher and blackboard are. However, the visual screening will not make sure that your child’s visual systems are developing correctly, nor will it ensure that their eyes are healthy. For this, they will need to have a comprehensive eye exam at our office.

We believe that educating our patients is vital in keeping their eyes healthy. At West U Vision, we provide total eye care, which includes exams, diagnosis, and treatment of disease with medicine or surgery. Conducting comprehensive exams accurately detects eye diseases or other abnormalities early, often before symptoms are present. Glaucoma, for example, is just one of the many conditions that your eye exam can confirm.

Glaucoma, the leading cause of blindness and visual impairment in the United States, is an eye disease that can lead to a permanent loss of vision. Actually, glaucoma is not just one eye disease, but a group of eye conditions resulting in optic nerve damage, which causes loss of vision. Abnormally high pressure inside your eye (intraocular pressure) usually, but not always, causes this damage. We provide all diagnostic and treatment options for glaucoma care, including glaucoma screening in. Glaucoma generally provides no warning signs or symptoms of disease, making testing an important part of a full vision exam. If it is determined that you do suffer from glaucoma, our Houston glaucoma doctor will discuss which treatment plan is best for your individual needs. Glaucoma can be treated with eye drops, pills, laser surgery, traditional surgery, or a combination of these methods. The goal of any treatment is to prevent loss of vision, as vision loss from glaucoma is irreversible. Surgery can be an incredibly effective treatment option for your eye disease. Laser treatments, for example, can be utilized for precise treatment and quick healing. However, it is best to consult our doctors first to best decide on a treatment plan right for you.

Early diagnosis and treatment can minimize or prevent optic nerve damage and limit glaucoma-related vision loss. It’s important to get your eyes examined regularly, and make sure your eye doctor measures your intraocular pressure. So even if your vision is blurry, it is clear where you should go for your glaucoma testing and treatment; call the office of West U Vision today to schedule an appointment with our Houston glaucoma doctor.

One of the easiest ways to care for your eyes is to make sure you have optimal nutrition. Eating green leafy vegetables, oily fish and eggs can help you maintain good omega-3 fatty acid levels. These contain nutrients such as zinc, vitamin C and E that can help with vision problems that commonly happen to people as they age, such as macular degeneration. Cataracts are also a worry. Studies show that eating foods high in these nutrients may help prevent cataracts and other eye diseases from forming. At your next Houston eye exam appointment, our staff will do a comprehensive eye exam in order to check for any of these problems. Quitting smoking, wearing sunglasses and lessening eye strain by taking computer breaks can all have a beneficial effect on your eyes as well.

Our Houston practice has been providing top-rated eye care for many years, and enjoys working with our customers, new and old, to help ensure great vision and great eyewear style! Our Houston optometrist offers personalized eye health and vision solutions for the entire family.

Our optical practice, West U Vision, also offers a wide selection of designer eyewear, frames, sunglasses and contact lenses to fit every patient and budget. Our Houston optometrist will perform a comprehensive eye exam that will detect any vision problems, including astigmatism, nearsightedness or farsightedness, and also detect any present eye diseases or conditions. It is very important to have a periodic eye check, as many eye diseases do not have symptoms in the early stages when they are treatable. Once eye diseases present noticeable symptoms, treatment options are limited and vision lost generally cannot be regained. Vision problems can linger unnoticed for quite some time, so it is best to have a comprehensive eye exam and discover any problems in the treatable, early stages.

You can take excellent care of your eyes by visiting our Houston optometrist for your regularly scheduled eye appointments. The recommended frequency of your eye care visits will depend upon your age, eye health, and general overall health. For instance, if you have type 2 diabetes, it may be recommended that you visit your optometrist more frequently. At West U Vision we also offer contact lens exams and fittings for those who are already wearing contacts but need new prescriptions, or for those who want to wear contacts for the first time. We also offer a large selection of designer eyeglasses, as well as sunglasses. Local Houston Eye Doctor

Houston Eyeglasses

Been thinking of switching to contact lenses from your eyeglasses? Just make an appointment at West U Vision to come in and see our local Houston eye doctor. You will receive a contact lens exam and a fitting by our optician to make certain that your transition to contacts is smooth and free of anxiety.

A contact lens exam is a more detailed version of the yearly comprehensive eye exam that is recommended for everyone. In addition to the tests that are part of a standard eye exam, our local Houston eye doctor will also pay close attention to your eyelids, conjunctiva, and your corneas- including the curvature of them. These details are important to ensuring that your eyes are suitable at this time for wearing contact lenses. Our goal is to prevent any problems such as infections or pain from wearing contacts.

The fitting of your contact lenses is also an important part of this process. Our local Houston eye doctor is aware that you are unlikely to ear your contacts if they are causing you discomfort. But there is a practical concern too. Properly fitted contact lenses give you the best possible vision since they sit in your eye perfectly. We will take the time to test our various contacts in your eyes until we find the ones that are right for you. With so many varieties to choose from, including between soft lenses and hard (or gas permeable) ones, you can rely on the expertise of our optician to help you decide. Even among soft lenses, there are daily wear, extended wear, disposable, and color changing. But you won’t have to feel confused with our guidance and advice to point you in the right direction.

Contact lenses hold some advantages over eyeglasses. For example, your physical appearance is not encumbered. With contacts, no one sees you any differently. Unless, of course, you want them to. With color changing lenses, you can indulge your sense of fashion, even if you don’t need them for vision correction. Contacts afford you full side to side vision, also, unlike eyeglasses. They also make it easier when engaging in physical activities or sports.

Our licensed optometrists are available for complete eye exams, and our sales staff provides experienced service to help you find the perfect eyeglass frames for your prescription needs and fashion sense. When you receive Houston vision care at West U Vision, you will be advised as to how often you should have a complete eye exam. This will depend on your age and you general health situation. However, family members of all ages should have complete eye exams to be sure that they are not developing any eye diseases or condition. When it comes to eye care, an ounce of prevention is well worth a pound of cure. We say this because many eye problems do not present any obvious symptoms to the patients in the early stages. For instance, this is definitely true with glaucoma, one of the leading causes of blindness for people over 65. However, when an eye disease is first diagnosed in a later stage, your treatment options are often limited and may not be as effective as they would have been during an earlier stage. Also, your chances for experiencing vision loss are greater, the later the disease is diagnosed. So be sure not to miss your scheduled exam. It could be more important than you think.

When you go for Houston vision care, at West U Vision, and request a complete eye exam, prepare for the exam to take up to an hour. There are many tests to be done, and it will take time for the eye dilation drops to take their full effect. Eye tests that will be performed at our eye exams include: visual acuity tests to measure vision sharpness; a cover test to see how well your eyes work together to form a single vision; a retinoscopy to determine an approximate eye prescription; a refraction test to determine any levels of nearsightedness, farsightedness of astigmatism; a slit lamp exam to detect cataracts, macular degeneration, corneal ulcers or diabetic retinopathy; a glaucoma test; and a pupil dilation test to be able to closely examine the internal structures of the eye. Additional tests will be done if you are being fit for contact lenses.

An optical prescription is an order that is written by either an ophthalmologist or an optometrist that specifies the formula that is needed to create corrective lenses that will correct a person’s vision problem. Optical prescriptions contain symbols (medical language codes). There are many codes that are on prescription. Each one represents a specific requirement for the optical prescription. If you’re experiencing vision problems, we recommend that you make an appointment with our Houston eye doctor at West U Vision to get an eye exam to determine if you need an optical prescription for corrective eyewear.

Corrective Lenses Houston

Corrective Lenses Houston

Many people don’t understand how to read their prescription. It’s a good idea for people to have a basic understanding of how to read it. When you come to our Houston eye doctor at West U Vision we will take the time to answer any questions you have. The basic symbols for an optical prescription include: The “sph box” (sphere)-amount of long or short sight that’s present (Plus signs indicate long sight, minus signs indicate short sight), The “Near VA” code- the smallest sized print that can be read with the prescription (usually written with the letter ”N” with a number after it), The “cl” box shows how much astigmatism is present, the “axis” tells the angle that the lens must be placed at when fit into the frame (ranges from 0-180 degrees), the “prism” is the correction that is needed to align the eyes in order for the eyes to work together and see straight, “Rdg add” is known as reading addition-it’s the additional positive power needed for the eyes to focus on close work (usually only needed for people with presbyopia, who need 2 prescriptions; one for reading and one for distance).

The “VA” symbol stands for visual acuity – it indicates the standard vision for each eye when corrected. In the United States, visual acuity is measured at 20 feet. It’s measured in a fraction (numerator is 20). The larger the denominator, the worse the vision is. A visual acuity test is done with a standard eye chart. The chart has several rows with letters (top row-largest letters, bottom row- smallest letters). 20/20 vision means that when a person stands 20 feet away they can read what people should be able to see from that distance. In the USA, usually the 20/20 line is 4th from the bottom on the chart. Since 20/20 vision is good (considered normal vision), people with 20/20 vision would not need an optical prescription.
